Frequently Asked Questions

Where is this Reishi™  made?

Reishi™ is made in Spain.

Reishi™ is first grown in our factory in Union, South Carolina, USA and then dyed and finished at our tannery in Igualada, Spain.

What is Reishi™ made from?

Reishi™ is a revolutionary material grown from mycelium. Reishi™ is grown from our patented Fine Mycelium™ process which uses only four ingredients: recycled-sawdust, bran, mycelium spawn and minimal filtered water. We can then add a textile, like cotton, silk or recycled polyester, to achieve Reishi™sheets of different performances, and customizations like thickness, weight and drape.

Our currently available SKUs are 60% mycelium, 40% cotton.

How is Reishi™  made?

Reishi™ is grown from our patented Fine Mycelium™ process.

As it grows, a dense sheet forms on the surface, and a textile can be optionally added to further enhance product performance. Our current SKUs are grown with a cotton textile. The resulting structure is cohesive and interwoven, enhancing the strength and handfeel of our products and allows for custom-grown specifications by our brand partners. After the growing period is complete, the Fine Mycelium™ sheets are peeled away from the surface of what is now a substrate brick and are then lubricated, packaged and sent for finishing at partner tanneries to become Reishi™.

For more information on how Reishi™ is grown, check out our process video on Instagram.

Reishi™  is currently available in Natural, Black Pebble and Black Doux. We can also created custom Reishi™ SKUs upon request. For customized Reishi™ orders please reach out to   wholesale@mycoworks.com.

Care & Fabrication

I ordered Reishi™ from the same SKU but the sheets are not identical. Is that normal?

Yes, it is possible and normal for there to be variability amongst Reishi™ sheets from the same SKU. Mycelium is a wild and natural resource that can grow and vary from harvest-to-harvest. However, the variability is purely aesthetic and has not shown to impact material quality.

What can Reishi™ Grade B be used for?

Reishi™ Grade B can be used, but are not limited to, the following applications:

  • Accenting
  • Simple construction bags
  • Simple construction accessories
  • Decorative items
  • Products for interiors: Wall Paneling, Displays, Upholstery (paneling, marquetry, etc)
  • Handheld goods
Do you have construction or fabrication tips for working with Reishi™?

For fabricating with Reishi™ we recommend:

  • avoiding overly folding or pinching Reishi™
  • exposing Reishi™  to high temperatures
  • Prepping and/or buffing the surface of Reishi™ prior to gluing to ensure that there is a lasting bond between substrate and Reishi™

For more questions, please visit our Fabrication Guide

Does Reishi™ need to be stored in specific conditions? Is the material shelf stable?

Reishi™ can be stored like any other fine materials in temperate, dry environments. Please avoid storage in overheated or overly dry environments.

How does Reishi™ wear over time?

Reishi™ is grown for longevity. With proper care, the life cycle of Reishi™ ™ is similar to traditional animal leather. Each sheet of Reishi™ ™ has a beautiful patina that develops with wear and time.

Sustainability and Certifications

What certifications does Reishi™ and your Fine Mycelium process have?
What is the environmental impact of Reishi™? Have you conducted an LCA?

Reishi™ has a low carbon footprint. Per our peer-reviewed LCA, finished and packaged

Reishi™ has a low carbon footprint of 2.76 kg CO2 eq. per m2 with no fabric addition.

Reishi™ can be further customized with an added fabric. The LCA was conducted with two other material options:

  • Cotton (our fabric of choice): 5.80 kg CO2 eq.
  • Recycled polyester: 3.06 kg CO2 eq.

Does Reishi™ contain chrome?

Reishi™ is chrome-free.

The Fine Mycelium™ process allows for a much cleaner, shorter, streamlined tanning process with no-chromium. Our process bypasses the traditional tanning process jumping

straight into re-tanning, making our water and chemistry usage comparatively very low to standard leather options on the market.

Does Reishi™ contain any plastic?

The Fine Mycelium™ process allows for mycelium materials to be grown with zero plastic, from growth to harvest. However, Reishi™ can be made optionally with a finish common in all leather products on the market today: a very thin <1% by weight aniline or semi aniline layer that protects a material from scratching and water damage. In our scaled operation, this option has been applied to Reishi™ in order to satisfy the same performance, quality, and hand-feel as other leathers on the market. At only a few microns thick, the finish does not impact biodegradability as shown in our SATRA ISO 20200 test, where our finished material shows biodegradability. However, finishes are customizable and we are able to deliver Reishi™ without the finish upon request.

Is Reishi™ biodegradable?

Per our SATRA ISO 20200 test, finished Reishi™ shows biodegradability. We are currently undergoing testing.

Is Reishi™ traceable?

Yes, Reishi™ is fully traceable.

MycoWorks’ Fine Mycelium™ process provides a traceability and transparency feature for its clients previously unheard of in the procurement of natural materials. Each sheet is printed with a unique code matched to the QR code of the tray it was grown in. The QR codes allow MycoWorks to monitor and fine-tune growth, tray-by-tray. Clients can now trace their material procurement from the strain of mycelium to when it leaves the facility to their ateliers with Reishi™.
